I'm with the Lee family because it's late and I'm too tired to return home. I'm finishing up some work in the living room of their apartment. Across from me is the dining area, the kitchen and a hallway that leads to several other rooms. Mrs. Lee is in the kitchen preparing dinner and she expects Mr. Lee home any minute. The kids, Gordon and George, are in a room watching Japanese anime.

Why disown a raped child?

Just read that parents disowned their 8 year old daughter because she was gang raped in the USA.

If someone raped my child, I would seek out the sicko and destroy him. Why aren't the parents of this 8 year old daughter reacting in the same way?

Someone told me that in some cultures, women and daughters are treated as property. If they are raped, they lose their value for marriage. They also bring shame to the family honour. Thus, there's no reason to keep them around.

I'm not satisfied with this answer. If someone violated a property of mine, like burnt down my home, I'd find the punk and break his skull. So even if women / daughters are treated as property, and the property is violated, shouldn't the owner's natural reaction to destroy the fucker who did it? If someone tarnishes my family name, I'd seek retribution.

If a gang armed with AK47s walked into a village and raped all the women and daughters, and families react by disowning their wives and daughters, and even stoning them to death, what is left of the village? If evil men want to destroy the village, just rape all the women, and let the families complete their own destruction by killing their own family members.

I don't understand the practical value of disowning raped daughters and wives.

**I realize why parents would disown. A child is a hungry mouth to feed. If a raped child is valueless, then she becomes a burden to the family provider. Disowning a raped child is a way to cut costs.

George is 16 years old, stands 5’9”, weighs 190 lbs and lives a sedentary life. He never exercises. He indulges in eating “delicious” foods and playing video games. “You uncultured slob!” Wow, it’s been a while since I last heard that. Nine years ago, my grade 10 English teacher called me one for thinking Camelot was a stable for camels. And between grade 7 and grade 10, teachers frequently reminded me of how culturally challenged I was, even by CBC standards (Canadian born Chinese).

Patty: I don't want to have kids yet. Life is so busy. If I had kids now, I won't have time for anything else. I don't know how other moms take care of kids and live for themselves.

John: But Patty, life only gets tougher as you get older. Time moves faster with age. It's like driving. There's a wall at the end of the road. The closer you get to the wall, the harder you step on the gas, so that on impact, you'll get a quick and painless death.

My dad led an interesting childhood, so it’s unfortunate that he rarely talks about it. He prefers to speak about the pleasant things of retirement, rather than reflect on the trying years of his youth.
